Last month I travelled to Paris, France, with the mayor and the director of the Tokamachi City Museum to attend some of the opening events at Japonismes 2018. It was my first time in France since a middle school class trip and homestay, and I was excited to be there during the closing stages of the World Cup as the French team had progressed to the semifinals.

What is Japonsimes 2018? It’s a city-wide event showcasing Japanese culture in Paris that was organized to mark the 160th anniversary of Japan-France diplomatic relations. Among a diverse schedule is an exhibition of contemporary art entitled “FUKAMI – une plongée dans l’esthétique japonaise” (A Dive into Japanese Aesthetics) held at the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild. This was the main reason for our trip to Paris, as items from Tokamachi’s National Treasure collection of kaen’gata doki (flame-style pottery) and oukan’gata doki (crown-style pottery) are at the center of the exhibition.

Elsewhere in Paris, we visited a shop called “Kinase” – which had only opened three days ago – that specialises in products from Niigata prefecture. There was a small collection of nihonshu on sale, and we were surprised to see three shelves occupied by bottles of Tokamachi’s “Tenjinbayashi”. The owner, who had moved to Paris after marrying a French man, said that bottles with calligraphy-painted labels were most popular and Tenjinbayashi was doing well for the same reason.

The Japonismes exhibition will continue until next year;, and Tokamachi’s Jomon pottery will be on exhibition until 18 August 2018. If you don’t happen to be in Paris, you can see the pottery at any time at the Tokamachi City Museum. (Flame-style Pottery vessel number 1 will be exhibited in the museum throughout the duration of the 2018 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale)
